2019 Schwarzwaelder MTB Cup – Freudenstadt, Germany

After I arrived home from Snowshoe I was very keen for a break and took some time off the bike. It was quite a last minute decision to race as I was finally starting to feel better in the days leading in.

I raced in Freudenstadt last year and enjoyed the course, so decided since it was close to where I was staying and had Cat 1 points on offer I might as well give it a nudge.

I travelled to the race the day before to get in a couple of practice laps and spent the night in Freudenstadt also. The start list was quite strong with some top European riders taking to the start line. I managed to hang in the lead group until 2 laps to go which was more than I had expected. I pushed hard on the final couple of laps to consolidate 4th place. Although I wasn’t as fit or fast as I would have liked to have been it was still a good sensation to feel like I could dig deep and push my body hard again. Good to pick up some more points and get another race effort in before the Tokyo test event. Also, a big thanks to my girlfriend Nicola and her family for their help during the weekend.

There are many things I love about mountain biking – the people you meet, the skills you need, the concentration it requires, race strategy, the opportunities to explore new places and countries.
