2022 World Mountain Bike Championship, Les Gets, France

Ross Bell

It was a disappointing day at World Champs. I pushed as hard as I could for the whole race and suffered like never before but the best I could do was 33rd place.

My Max HR was about 10 beats lower than normal topping out at only 169bpm with an average of 160bpm for the whole race.

A sign that my body is fatigued and still struggling to perform at the highest level. I feel perfectly normal in day-to-day life and also riding at an endurance pace feels completely fine, but the last 10% is still lacking.

I will be having an easy week and hoping for better for the final World Cup in Val di Sole this weekend. It has been a very challenging year with injuries and illness but hopefully it’s all out of the way now to have a smooth sailing 2023 season.

There are many things I love about mountain biking – the people you meet, the skills you need, the concentration it requires, race strategy, the opportunities to explore new places and countries.
